Battleship is an action/explosions/sfx movie, of the military vs alien invaders subgenre, and here the hero is the US Navy. Unfortunately the film wanted to be dramatic entertainment with some appeal to wider audiences, so that for about 45 minutes or so there is a lot of standing and sitting around setting up character and relationships, etc. And worst of all, both the first and second part (some pretty cool action and effects) are bloated with overlong scenes. That kind of pacing is deadly. If there is ever a director's cut, cutting out some scenes entirely, and speeding up others would REALLY help this movie, which is a good 20-30 minutes too long. E.g. people just stand and watch (several times) as the alien slowly breaks down the door (or whatever). And it did have some very nice ideas (like the guy with prosthetic legs or the Japanese captain, or again the old timers crewing the battleship), which it is a shame to have wasted. I would watch it again, but with fast forwarding.

Like a 2-star "Independence Day". The Navy fends off an alien attack. Best enjoyed by viewers under 25. Thin, simple plot, lots of special-effects, action and good tunes.

An entertaining action sci-fi movie. Not sure why Rhianna was in the movie. No value added there.

Hollywood has been making enlistment films for years and this is a good one with some nice comedic moments throughout by Taylor Kitsch.. If I thought I'd join the military and fight aliens, I'd have done it years ago. I was wishing they'd shave Rihanna's head.

I liked the movie. However, I think that we can all agree that Taylor Kitsch cannot act. Brooklyn decker is not much better although she does have a couple of things going for her :-) Let's talk about what was probably supposed to be Rihanna's memorable one-liner (yes, she should stick to singing and cannot act either) - when she says "Mahalo, MF", I think she was meant to say "Aloha, MF" since "Mahalo" means "Thank you" in Hawaiian, whereas "Aloha" means "Goodbye" (or "Hello" but this would not be pertinent) in Hawaiian. Is it just me who noticed this? Yes, the movie was cliched and sappy, but it was entertaining and the special effects were good.

when it was out in the theater i went to go see it w/ me wife and 8 yr old son. he didn't move 1 inch during the entire movie. in matter of fact when it came out on dvd his mom bought it for him

Horribly cliched, and really bad dialogue. Not worth the watch and really glad I didn't pay to watch this drivel in the theatre.

Cal Zapata (running down the mountain to the Jeep): "Wait up! Wait up! Don't leave! Don't leave!" Lt. Col. Mick Canales (aiming his firearm): "Stop right there!" Cal Zapata: "Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" Sam: "Who are you?!?" Cal Zapata: "I'm Cal... Zapata. We sent out a beacon..." (suddenly notices the Lt. Col's prosthetic legs) "OH SH*T! IS HE A CYBORG?!?" (jumps in bushes)

“Lieutenant Colonel Mick Canales: Let's give the world one more day. Scientist: Who talks like that?”

Scientist: I'm going to freakin save you!
