I'm always envious of kids who are reading this for the first time (and without watching the movie version) because they are going to get that awesome feeling at the surprise ending. This is one of the best sci fi books written for kids in the last 20 years.

Can't believe I watched the movie first! The book was better. Revealed more than what the movie portrayed. A good read as post-apocalyptic books go.

I really loved this book, it brings me into a whole new world and I loved when it got to the Journey part. The ending was so good and it made me wanna read the second book so bad. I would definitely recommend this to all ages

The City of Ember is the best book I've ever read! My favorite part is the singing. I think the song is very nice and represents the dark city of Ember. Lina and Doon are really smart for kids that don't know what boat, paddles, candles, and matches are, still, they managed to figure out what they all are, and do. Jeanne DuPrau is a GREAT author. Can't wait to read number two!

this book was great she is a really good author

In the City of Ember, lived two young teenagers named Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow. Surronding their city is nothing but total darkness. For 200 years, the citizens of the City of Ember lived in a world of amazing lights. But now, the buildings are crumbling, the supplies are decreasing and worst of all- the lights are starting to go out. When Lina finds an old box whos content may save the city from going to utter darkness, she discusses it with Doon. And unfortunately, as the contents of the box were ancient and that Lina's little sister has chewed on it, there are holes in the paper. The papers seem to be instructions for something..... can it be intructions to save their city?

“There is so much darkness in Ember, Lina. It's not just outside, it's inside us, too. Everyone has some darkness inside. It's like a hungry creature. It wants and wants and wants with a terrible power. And the more you give it, the bigger and hungrier it gets.” ― Jeanne DuPrau, The City of Ember
