A Vagrant" takes readers on a romp through history and literature--with dignity for few and cookies for all--with comic strips about famous authors, their characters, and political and historical figures, all drawn in Kate Beaton's pared-down, excitable style. This collection features favorite stories as well as new, previously unpublished content. Whether she's writing about Nikola Tesla, Napoleon, or Nancy Drew, Beaton brings a refined sense of the absurd to every situation.

Add a CommentThis book was a lot of fun. The comics are funny and the author's footnotes are laugh out loud funny. I feel like I learned something. A great take on historical figures and events. http://beatonna.tumblr.com/
Very funny and intelligent collection of strips. Highly recommended.
Very clever cartoons that are best for people familiar with classic fiction, a little history (and that includes Canadian history) and pop culture. I figure I got about 3/4 of them, but they are really sharply observed and quite funny.
"Witty, occasionally wise, sometimes surreal, at other times silly, mocking of past, present and pretense, Hark! A Vagrant is one of the most innovative and delightful collections I’ve come across." Martin Levin Globe & Mail
Very funny. The Nancy Drew interpretations alone make this a fun read. Despite the style of illustrations, this is not a book for kids.
A collection of comics by the witty Kate Beaton. Largely on history and fiction (both classics and pop culture), Beaton's book includes many of the brilliant cartoons that are both funny but also spur you to go and look up the reference source. My favourites include the cartoons on Jane Austen, Jane Eyre, Canadian History, and the always delightful Nancy Drew. To really figure out if it's a book you'll enjoy, I highly recommend perusing Beaton's website: www.harkavagrant.com which is the original source of many of these comics.
Beaton is a young Canadian cartoonist whose website became hugely popular, and whose work now appears in Harpers and The New Yorker. She melds comics with historical and literary figures...and with lots of Canadian content and sheer wit.
