New York Times bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank is back home in the Carolina lowcountry, spinning a tale that brims with the warmth, charm, heart, and humor that has become her trademark. Porch Lights is a stirring, emotionally rich multigenerational story--a poignant tale of life, love, and transformation--as a nurse, returning to Sullivans Island from the Afghanistan War, finds her life has been irrevocably altered by tragedy...and now must rediscover love and purpose with the help of her son and aging mother.

An evocative visit to enchanting Sullivans Island with its unique pluff mud beaches, palmetto trees, and colorful local lore--a novel filled with unforgettable characters, and enlivened by tales of the notorious Blackbeard and his bloodthirsty pirate crew and eerie Edgar Allan Poe stories--Porch Lights stands tall among the very best works of not only Dottie Frank, but Anne Rivers Siddons, Rebecca Wells, Pat Conroy, and other masters of the modern Southern novel as well.

Jackie becomes widow, husband died working with NYFD. She and son Charlie go to visit her mom on island off Carolinas. Narative switches between mother/daughter. Well written, enjoyable, warm fuzzy ending.

Her books are always fun to read and I enjoy the low country history and stories.
But I always wish she would delve deeper into the great characters she develops ;) author seems to know how to create characters that are experiencing issues common with her readers but just leaves them seemly underdeveloped !

You know, it is hard to beat Dorothea Benton Frank when it comes to writing styles. Frank has a way of personalizing her stories so you feel like you are there. She really is a good writer,
I think some of her story lines are simplistic, and this wasn't a real "couldn't put it down" sort of book, but I just like to read her works.

Took too long meandering around and losing the storyline for me.

An easy read with characters you can like and root for. Good lessons but a very simple book. Something for a lazy afternoon.

It was an ok book. I have read a lot of her books and women are always the main characters. some of her women seem to be a little bit needy, like needing to share intimate details about their private lives. ick! where's the mystery in that? oh well, I have ordered her latest book so I must get something out of them!

Easy read with good characters that kept the story moving along.

Beach read with a happy ending. This is probably one of the better Frank novels--one of these days I have to get to Sullivan's Island.
