In hardcover for the first time, here is the novel that started it all-the first book in J. D. Robb's number-one New York Times-bestselling In Death series, featuring New York City homicide detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Roarke. It is the year 2058, and technology now completely rules the world. But New York City Detective Eve Dallas knows that the irresistible impulses of the human heart are still ruled by just one thing-passion. When a senator's daughter is killed, the secret life of prostitution she'd been leading is revealed. The high-profile case takes Lieutenant Eve Dallas into the rarefied circles of Washing-ton politics and society. Further complicating matters is Eve's growing attraction to Roarke, who is one of the wealthiest and most influential men on the planet, devilishly handsome . . . and the leading suspect in the investigation.

The "In Death" series is a monument to series character development. You learn, love, and grow with Eve and her (reluctantly) growing family. The murder plots are intriguing without being too complicated, and Eve's way of chasing down the killers tugs at your heart strings.

Spoiler alert: the first time you see the character Richard DeBlass, if you have any mass media experience at all you should know you have your villain. He’s a conservative republican senator running for president on a ticket of morality and restoring the right to bear arms. Take him away, officer, and skip the next 225 pages; but if you do you’ll miss the explicit sex scenery suitable for mental voyeurism. Lt. Eve Dallas. She’s a dedicated cop, the best her commander has. She doesn’t comb her hair; she doesn’t want a man. Oh sure, she’s had sex, but it’s nothing special, until she meets Roarke, the man of every woman’s unfulfilled dreams. He’s rich, really rich, accomplished, provides spectacular sex and he understands her perfectly. Anyway, there you have it.

The writing is fine, and the fact that it takes place in a future with some interesting technology is fun. The crimes were appropriately gripping. But I found the relationship between Eve and Roarke (the use of his one name became increasingly annoying) tiresome, especially her attitude. Didn't finish it.

This was recommended to me by my best friend, whose co-worker recommended the series to her. We are both book lovers and Nora Robert lovers. So I was curious to see what this book series was about. And I am addicted and cannot wait to catch up on more. I basically finished this book in one day and already picked up the next 2 books in the series. I have used the new features on this website to start placing the other books in the series on my "shelf" to check out later. I am very pleased with the writing, the character developments etc.

This was recommended by a friend, I really enjoyed it. I have started reading the entire series, and the character development and relationships keep me reading. Sometimes they can be too dark, since Robb/Roberts does a good job developing the bad guys as well.

I liked the book for its serious tone, the futuristic world setting, and the amount of detail given to the crime scenes and the whole investigative process. The romance though didn't make a fan out of me with the hero too perfect and our heroine with no personality besides her job.

Indeed a fast paced thriller with all your average detective novel stuff. The time period is fun and Robb does a good job at making it believable. She can write a decent sex sceen as well, decent read i might give the 2nd book in the series a try soon :-)
