Even though I have been reading this series out of order, it is easy to follow. I love Bones and Cat's relationship. They are there for each other no matter what is thrown at them I laughed at their jokes to themselves and others. My eyes also filled up at a couple of the events in this book. Love this series!!

I enjoyed the book very much, enjoyed the new maturity to Cat and Bones and as usually just love Bones and how open he is. I laughed out loud at some of the great witty one liners. Can't wait for "One Grave at a Time" out Fall 2011.

Even with three years between the previous book and this one, Frost doesn’t miss a beat. Most of the confusion I had was trying to remember what had happened back in 2009, rather than any missed clarifications on the author’s part. I never thought I’d see Cat and Bones again, so it was a treat to see what they’ve been up to since the last time.

“Before we go, I gotta know: If mind-reading abilities are real, there's something else I wondered if fiction got right about vampires-"

"Ask me if I sparkle and I'll kill you where you stand," Bones cut him off with utmost seriousness.” - This Side Of The Grave

I turned around to see Vlad examining his fingernails, as if his hands weren't still ablaze in the flames that had blasted the ghoul's head off moments ago. "What the hell was that?" I gasped. "Premature inflamulation", he replied. "Happens sometimes. Very embarrassing, I don't like to talk about it."

Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they’ve triumphed over the latest battle, Cat’s new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance…
With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous “ally”—the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war. …to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.

In This Side Of The Grave we see a Cat that seems to be more at peace with her vampirism and all that comes with it. Her character is maturing and evening out, however she can kick ass and take names even better than before.

We also get a good dose of action, violence and as always the dialogue is laced with clever wit and humor. However the one thing that bothered me throughout the story was the absence of the villain. He is referred to often and we know he is the big bad, but he doesn't make an appearance until very late in the story. I think because of his absence he seemed less evil and less of a threat and because of that the conflict lost some of its steam.

Vlad gets some good page time in this book and I'm not going to lie, I'm an ungrateful reader. I wanted more Vlad. Of all the secondary characters in this series Vlad is the one has touched me the most. He is a good friend to Cat and despite his horrific reputation as a cold blooded killer, I love him. Frost has a knack for creating characters that do unspeakable violence and making her readers love them anyway. Some of Vlad's one liners are the best.
