As a boy, filmmaker James Cameron dreamed of a journey to the deepest part of the ocean. This film is the dramatic fulfillment of that dream. It chronicles Cameron's solo dive to the depths of the Mariana Trench and nearly seven miles beneath the ocean's surface piloting a submersible he designed himself. The risks were astounding. The footage is breathtaking. A celebration of science, courage, and extraordinary human aspiration.

Interesting, as Cameron tries to do what no person has done before, and takes significant risks as he does so. I'm not sure that his premise/conclusion - explore all of the planet because it is fascinating - is the right approach, however. It seems whatever we do and wherever we go, we pollute. So maybe we should leave a few places untouched. You will see the sub dropping lead shot to the seafloor, possibly injuring wildlife and creating a chemical change to the local environment. Maybe it's not so bad, but maybe there will be unforeseen consequences. I presume a bait trap went unrecovered in the Marianas; I didn't see an explanation of that. Very interesting storytelling and sea shots, though. Certainly, the teamwork is nothing less than impressive to have accomplished such a crazy feat.

A thoroughly engaging documentary by filmmaker James Cameron. He has spent a great deal of time in the period following Titanic making documentaries and exploring the depths of the ocean, to the point where one would like him to keep doing so (seriously, who needs more Avatar sequels?). His curiousity and enthusiasm are infectious as he and a crew work on a project to descend into a place that has only been touched once- Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench, the deepest part of the ocean. Cameron's methodical personality comes through, but also a sense of wonder about a part of the world vastly different from human experience. Very well worth seeing.
