The story of Skip Cuddy, the Blessings caretaker, who finds a baby asleep in that box and decides he wants to keep her, and of matriarch Lydia Blessing, who, for her own reasons, decides to help him, Blessings explores how the secrets of the past affect decisions and lives in the present; what makes a person, a life, legitimate or illegitimate, and who decides; the unique resources people find in themselves and in a community. This is a powerful novel of love, redemption, and personal change by the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer about whom The Washington Post Book World said, "Quindlen knows that all the things we ever will be can be found in some forgotten fragment of family."

This story of a young man from the wrong side of the tracks who finds and keeps a newborn baby is rich in characters, plot, and setting. It includes snippets from the life of a wealthy young woman coming of age during WW II, now 80 years old, family secrets, various nuanced relationships, illicit love, deep grief, and hope.

From the opening scene where we watch as an unnamed boy and girl drive up to an old mansion, leave a newborn in a box by the garage door, and drive away we know we are in the hands of a master storyteller. In telling this particular story the author gives us a wider vision of the shape a life can take. The lens moves in and out; all elements of the novel come together to give the reader a lovely, moving experience.

This is a very good story about an abandoned baby left in a box. Found by a young handyman who looks after it and loves the baby. The old lady who owns the big house also gets involved. A sad ending however. I did not like the bad language sprinkled throughout the story. A great novelist like this could surely come up with different words to express the meanings.

I read this book a few years ago and it is still touching. Anna Quindlen has a great way of connecting to the emotions of the characters. This was a great story!
