"Set in contemporary Northern California,The Harder They Come explores the volatile connections between three damaged people, an aging ex-Marine and Vietnam veteran, his psychologically unstable son, and the son's paranoid, much-older lover, as they careen toward an explosive confrontation. On a cruise to Central America, seventy-year-old Sten Stensen unflinchingly kills an armed robber menacing a busload of tourists. The reluctant hero is relieved to return home to Fort Bragg, California-only to find that his delusional son, Adam, has spiraled out of control. Adam has become involved with Sara, a hardened member of a right-wing anarchist group that refuses to acknowledge the laws of the state. Adam's senior by some fifteen years, she becomes his protector and inamorata. As Adam's mental state fractures, he becomes increasingly delusional until a schizophrenic breakdown leads him to shoot two people. On the run, he takes to the woods, spurring the biggest manhunt in California history."--

I think as Mr. Boyle gets older his writing is becoming more restrained. Mellowed. Effortless. T.C. tells a story of modern extremists way out on the west coast in an imaginary world with dire consequences. Illegals, ecology of grow-ops, private animal preserves, tourism, acting out on ones own interpretation of the U.S. constitution. It begins and ends with Sten Stenson, a retired principal and ex-marine. He stops a mugging when he's on a vacation with his wife and comes home to publicity, but then things start happening with his mentally disturbed son that draw negative attention to him and his wife, Carolee. Thanks, Loved It! Took about five days to read.

Twisty little character study, compelling plot!

Boyle is a masterful crafter of plots, and this tense drama doesn't disappoint. The focus here is a young man suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, and when the narration takes his point of view, the ride is at once fascinating, disturbing, and tragic. Boyle populates the novel with plenty of other interesting characters, with violence, bigotry, and miscommunication as central themes. The pace is rapid enough to keep the pages turning, and with great character development and story lines, this novel is a sure winner for a wide range of readers.

Waste of time. Weird storyline. Didn't like the main lead female character. Quite grossed out by Adam/Colter character. The writing style was awkward because it seemed like each sentence was building up to some climactic moment, which never comes. Just a waste of time.
