The Kez Army is marching on the Adro forces, while betrayal and corruption weaken them from within. Even the return of Field Marshal Tamas might not be enough to save Adro, especially if Tamas's son, Taniel, fails in his efforts to control a god bent on destruction. While everyone is focused on the front, an even larger threat might lie in wait back in the capital of Adopest.

After burning through the first two books in the Powder Mage trilogy, it was easy to fly through the conclusion. The Autumn Republic is just as fast paced and bloody as the first two novels, only with a good dose of bittersweetness spread within. The finale provides a lot of information on the 'Gods' of The Nine, the history of the world, and the final plans of the enemies of Adro. The story even leaves enough open for future books in the same world. Cosmere fans will find it a bit hard not to recognize the similiarities between this trilogy and some of the larger writings of McClellan's former instructor, Brandon Sanderson. The build up, the betrayals, the reveals of the 'true enemy hiding in plain sight' all seem to happen at similar points in the each of the author's stories. That comparison becomes moot when you realize this system is common in most fantasy story telling, and has been a staple of fantasy literature long before either of the authors were born. I'm finding it difficult to hold off jumping into the next trilogy (long list waiting to be read), but I would strongly recommend this series to fantasy and even historic fiction fans.
