Epic tale of struggle and survival told in classic manly Hemingway fashion. Very well read: I listen in 1.5X which allows me to listen to more audio and actually enhances the experience for me as it does require concentration and you do not lose content from a mind wandering.

A very good (but not quite a Great) book. The layers of symbolism and themes in their sequences a interactions and developments make it like a little literary symphony. The printed version is better than this audio recording: the reader is way too evenly paced and monotone, it sounds like he's falling asleep. The work merits a re-recording with a better narrator.

A classic. Nice to re-visit this story after all these years. I also thought Donald Sutherland did an outstanding job in his reading of this story, Hemingway would have raised his glass to his performance!!!

On another forum entirely, someone who reviewed this audiobook was highly critical of Donald Sutherland's performance. The reviewer had suggested that the reading was lacklustre and that Sutherland had sort of "phoned it in".

I disagreed and so decided to write this comment to encourage audiobook lovers to give it a try.

In my view, Sutherland read the novella with great reverence. As I listened to his enunciation, I felt like I was watching him act on screen. The story itself is moving but I found Sutherland's reading of it to be especially so.
