"A heart-wrenching, yet hopeful, memoir of a young marriage that is redefined by mental illness and affirms the power of love. Mark and Giulia's life together began as a storybook romance. The fell in love at eighteen, married at twenty-four, and were living their dream life in San Francisco. When Giulia was twenty-seven, she suffered a terrifying and unexpected psychotic break that landed her in the psych ward for nearly a month. One day she was vibrant and well-adjusted; the next she was delusional and suicidal, convinced that she was the devil and that her loved ones were not safe. All she wanted was to die. Eventually, Giulia fully recovered, and the couple had a son. But, soon after Jonas was born, Giulia had another breakdown, and then a third a few years after that. Pushed to the edge of the abyss, everything the couple had once taken for granted was upended. A story of the fragility of the mind, and the tenacity of the human spirit, My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward is, above all, a love story that raises profound questions: How do we care for the people we love? What and who do we live for? Breathtaking in its candor, radiant with compassion, and written with dazzling lyricism, Lukach's is an intensely personal odyssey through the harrowing years of his wife's mental illness, anchored by an abiding devotion to family that will affirm readers' faith in the power of love"--

I thought it was an interesting perspective on mental illness from the caregiver’s perspective. It was very honest about their experience on learning how to work on their dynamic as a couple and becoming a team.

The book was quite well done. A interesting perspective of the caregiver and the affects of mental illness on the loved ones of the sufferer. Wonderful people that you will root for, hope for, and ultimately, search online to see how things are going for them now. Best of luck to them!

I have a family member with severe mental illness so I know how hard it can be. Having said that, this book was not about the ill person, Giulia. It was about Mark who acted like a victim and whined through the entire thing. Many of us deal with these issues and we don't have the luxury of quitting jobs, travelling the world or a strong extended family. Not sure how that was possible but I'm glad they had those luxuries during a difficult time. I'm empathetic for anyone going through it but my goodness, man up. Nobody chooses mental illness. Nobody chooses the bulk of the stuff life hands us.

Poignant memoir of a husband's struggles to help and support his wife. Discusses their shared challenges with her mental illness.

A heart wrenching memoir of a young marriage and mental illness. Mark, the author does a great job of telling his story of his wife's illness and gradual recovery. His loyalty never wavers and the healing power of love and endurance.
I loved this book, was easy to read. Highly recommend this book with anyone who has a mental illness or if you know someone.
This book was written in 2017, and would be interesting to know how she is doing today, and if eventually they will be able to give her mental illness a name, even though they had ideas what it is.

A well told memoir of a husband who has to manage his wife's mental illness and hospitalization in the Psych Ward following psychosis.Mark Lukach tells the love story of his relationship with his wife Giulia and how he struggles with her psychosis which is at first not diagnosed and then labelled Bipolar Disorder. Mark's story resonates with how he has to be superman first managing himself and Giulia and then their little son Jonas too. The book was powerful but I felt that Mark did not tell Giulia's side of the story as much as it deserved to be told.

This true story is about the author's wife developing a psychosis and their experiences with the American mental health system, and how her illness affected him. I found it boring and skimmed through it to finish it.

Fantastic. Could not put it down. Finished with a huge amount of respect and admiration for both the author and his wife, and their families. A beautifully written story.

I was rather disappointed in this memoir. I think it was because I expected more about the wife's experience with the diagnosis of mental illness and the treatment, but the entire story was from the perspective of her husband. Perhaps the title should be "My Experience of My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward." It would have been more accurate. While he did an excellent job describing the difficulty, upheavel and frustration a family endures with the diagnosis of mental illness, the story just seemed too one-sided and a bit self-indulgent for me.

Mark and Guilia have a happy courtship and the beginnings of happy marriage until Guilia start acting strange. So begins a mystery diagnosis - which is never really pinned down - and the first of three stays in the psych ward. Mark's struggle is painful but Guilia's hit more with me. Either way you read it there's a painful story here and missteps and frustrations on either side. The love that Mark has for his wife, and that Guilia has for her husband, is what keeps you going throughout the whole thing
