" How to Invent Everything is such a cool book. It's essential reading for anyone who needs to duplicate an industrial civilization quickly." --Randall Munroe, xkcd creator and New York Times -bestselling author of What If?

The only book you need if you're going back in time

What would you do if a time machine hurled you thousands of years into the past. . . and then broke? How would you survive? Could you improve on humanity's original timeline? And how hard would it be to domesticate a giant wombat?

With this book as your guide, you'll survive-- and thrive --in any period in Earth's history. Bestselling author and time-travel enthusiast Ryan North shows you how to invent all the modern conveniences we take for granted--from first principles. This illustrated manual contains all the science, engineering, art, philosophy, facts, and figures required for even the most clueless time traveler to build a civilization from the ground up. Deeply researched, irreverent, and significantly more fun than being eaten by a saber-toothed tiger, How to Invent Everything will make you smarter, more competent, and completely prepared to become the most important and influential person ever. You're about to make history. . . better.

I'm super interested in this book's concept and enjoy the author's tone however it's disappointing that the endnotes and comments linked in the text are not functional. I am using an Android version of Media Overdrive and have not had issues in the past with similar uses of endnotes and comments (e.g. works by Terry Pratchett or Jasper Fforde). So I'm not sure what the issue is but it can apparently be resolved by reading the text in a browser.

Imagine time travel were possible. Imagine that you travel back into the distant past. Now imagine something happens to your time machine and you are stranded eons ago. If that were to happen to you, you'll be glad that this book by Ryan North was included in your time machine, as he outlines how to invent all that you will need to survive and prosper from language and math to beer.

There is a lot to love about this guide to the very basics of culture and technology (mostly Western). Ryan North is a funny writer (you may recognize him from Squirrel Girl and Jughead and Dinosaur Comics) and the book has lots of interesting footnotes and quirks. I think my favourite thing though is that it isn't a book on how to restart civilization after it falls. That would have been the easy concept to go for, but not nearly as funny, and wouldn't be as useful.
