Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, where women are prohibited from holding jobs, reading, and forming friendships. She serves in the household of the Commander and his wife, and under the new social order she has only one purpose: once a month, she must lie on her back and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if they are fertile. But Offred remembers the years before Gilead, when she was an independent woman who had a job, a family, and a name of her own. Now, her memories and her will to survive are acts of rebellion.

This is a great depiction of Margaret Atwood's classic book. I knew I needed to reread The Handmaid's Tale before I read The Testaments and this was a great way to do it.

This is a good graphic novel adaptation of Atwood's remarkable novel. The artwork is fine and the story, obviously compressed for the medium, is faithful to the novel and spirit therein (Atwood had a hand in this adaptation). Quite a good achievement and a book I had not expected to come out in this format. If you've never read the book, this is a good introduction or synopsis. However, I would recommend reading the novel on which this is based. It is, obviously, far richer in detail and storytelling.

Renee Nault adds beautiful watercolor and ink illustrations to an abbreviated retelling of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale.
Nault's visuals add to the depth of Atwood's poetic world building and all the feels of the modern classic.
The only reason I gave my review 4.5 stars is because I wanted more and probably won't get it unless Nault partners with Atwood for The Testaments (released Sept. 2019).
Regardless of how many times you have read The Handmaid's Tale, pick up this graphic novel.

I'm always interested in graphic adaptations of literature, and this is one of the best I've ever read. Even after reading Atwood's novel and watching the first two seasons of the show (thanks to KCLS), Nault's artwork and adaptation still riveted me. HIghly recommended!
