When a mother is targeted by a dangerous group of masterminds, she must commit a crime to save her kidnapped daughter -- or risk losing her forever -- in this "propulsive and original" thriller (Stephen King).
It's something parents do every morning: Rachel Klein drops her daughter at the bus stop and heads into her day. But a cell phone call from an unknown number changes everything: it's a woman on the line, informing her that she has Kylie bound and gagged in her back seat, and the only way Rachel will see her again is to follow her instructions exactly: pay a ransom, and find another child to abduct. This is no ordinary kidnapping: the caller is a mother herself, whose son has been taken, and if Rachel doesn't do as she's told, the boy will die.
"You are not the first. And you will certainly not be the last." Rachel is now part of The Chain, an unending and ingenious scheme that turns victims into criminals -- and is making someone else very rich in the process. The rules are simple, the moral challenges impossible; find the money fast, find your victim , and then commit a horrible act you'd have thought yourself incapable of just twenty-four hours ago.
But what the masterminds behind The Chain know is that parents will do anything for their children. It turns out that kidnapping is only the beginning.
"McKinty is one of the most striking and most memorable crime voices to emerge on the scene in years. His plots tempt you to read at top speed, but don't give in: this writing -- sharply observant, intelligent and shot through with black humor -- should be savored." -- Tana French
"A masterpiece. You have never read anything quite like The Chain and you will never be able to forget it." -- Don Winslow
"Diabolical, unnerving, and gives a whole new meaning to the word "relentless". Adrian McKinty just leapt to the top of my list of must-read suspense novelists. He's the real deal." -- Dennis Lehane
"Pairing an irresistible concept with a winner protagonist, The Chain promises to be your new addiction once you succumb to the first enticing page." -- Alafair Burke
"A grade-A-first-rate-edge-of-your-seat thriller. I can't believe what went through my mind while reading it." -- Attica Locke

This was a super interesting thriller! Rachel's daughter is kidnapped, and to get her back, she must not only pay a ransom, but kidnap another child.......then convince that child's parents to kidnap someone....and so on. The chain is unending......the book was a riveting, fast read I could barely put down.

Imagine receiving an early morning anonymous phone call telling you your only child has been kidnapped and if you want to see her again you must pay a ransom and kidnap another child and not break the chain. So begins this thrilling book by Adrian McKinty. I could not put it down. Follow Rachel as she becomes part of the chain and jumps into action to rescue her daughter but at what cost to her. Pick up this book and find out about The Chain and the dark web and the secrets Rachel uncovers along the way.

Awesome book. Loved the skill at pulling together the concept of the chain, and the ending when you find out the how & why is great. I read this book in less than 2 days, loved it,

IN reality, this is a pretty unbelievable scenario. But as a page turner, it rates pretty high. The unbelievable part is the children kidnapped never telling anyone what happened. There is no way that could happen. But I still enjoyed the story as a fantasy.

I was a huge fan of this book until the ending. It was engaging and pulled me in right away. Sadly the ending felt rushed and anti-climatic.

Could not finish this book. Writing is not great and the premise is also not great. Don't understand how it has made it to the bestseller lists. I did not even care to find out how it turned out as there are so many other good books to read.

Don't break The Chain. If you do, The Chain will come after you. You and your family will die. To keep the chain going and have your child safely returned, you must pay a ransom and kidnap someone else's child. Could you do it? This book has a unique plot that will keep you turning pages till the very end!

I liked this book quite a bit but the whole idea is really stupid. In this day and age everyone knows that even though kidnappers always say not to contact the police, if your kid is kidnapped of course you call them right away. Nevertheless I'm glad with how it turned out (although of course everyone would have been in jail lol).

This book is based off of a terrifying concept, kidnap a child so that yours can return home to you. I really do think this is believable in today's age. It had a good "big brother" feeling to it with the people running the chain. Unexpected ending.
