The ancient Chinese text known as CHUANG TZU has been translated into English many times, but never with the freshness, accessibility, and accuracy of this remarkable rendering--the result of a unique collaboration between one of America's premier poet-translators and a leading Chinese scholar. At turns playful and acerbic, the book presents a philosophy of life that is politically radical and deeply spiritual.

" People with the webbed toes of rhetoric just heap up bricks and knot together rat-tails of argument, rambling among ' hard ' and ' white,' ' same' and ' different, ' for no more than a moment's reputation. One who wants to set things straight can't lose sight of the facts of nature and destiny. For one like this, what's united is not webbed, what stands apart is not extra, what's long knows no excess, and what's short is not without sufficient footing. The duck's legs are short, but if you stretch them, he'll be anxious. The crane's legs are long, but if you shorten them, he'll be sad."
