Is anyone out there?

Ann Burden is sixteen years old and completely alone. The world as she once knew it is gone, ravaged by a nuclear war that has taken everyone from her. For the past year, she has lived in a remote valley with no evidence of any other survivors.

But the smoke from a distant campfire shatters Ann's solitude. Someone else is still alive and making his way toward the valley. Who is this man? What does he want? Can he be trusted? Both excited and terrified, Ann soon realizes there may be worse things than being the last person on Earth.

I just accidentally came across this one at work and checked it out. In a small, secluded valley in Utah, where it apparently has its own weather, even, 15-year-old Ann Burden ekes out a living for herself, all alone. Her family left to find other survivors of the nuclear bomb war (her brother was supposed to stay with her, but stowed away on one of the trucks) and never came back. So Ann's been alone for a year when a stranger appears, in a green suit no less. Not a business suit, but protective gear that is the only one of its kind. Although it's probably a realistic scenario in which a 30-something man ends up, after extensive traveling and surviving radiation poisoning, with a teenage girl: he feels the need to be in control, of everything. It's scary and sickening.

And Claudette, don't read this one.

Ann Burden is the only one left after a nuclear war has seemingly made the world radioactive. Her family's small farm escaped the devastation because it is nestled in a deep valley, After a year on her own she sees a man. He is wearing a protective suit and facemask and is pulling a cart. She is cautious but after a time welcomes him into her home and her life. He suffers radiation sickness, survives, and then the dynamic changes. The author handles this situation well. I have read quite a few of end of the world stories and this one was a bit of a twist on the normal endings. You may not see it coming.
