In the blazing July heat of imperial Rome, Flavia Albia inspects a decomposing corpse. It has been discovered in lots to be auctioned by her family business, so she's determined to identify the dead man and learn how he met his gruesome end.

The investigation will give her a chance to work with the magistrate, Manlius Faustus, the friend she sadly knows to be the last chaste man in Rome. But he's got other concerns than her anonymous corpse. It's election time and with democracy for sale at Domitian's court, tension has come to a head. Faustus is acting as an agent for a 'good husband and father', whose traditional family values are being called into question. Even more disreputable are his rivals, whom Faustus wants Albia to discredit.

As Albia's and Faustus' professional and personal partnership deepens they have to accept that, for others, obsession can turn sour, and become a deadly strain that leads, tragically, to murder.

Very good, but with a few too many street directions for Imperial Rome. A good involved plot with the usual twists and surprises. Albia is a worthy successor to her father, Marcus Didius, and her rocky romance is very enjoyable. Very good read.

Terrific mystery !!! Keeps you guessing until the end with some interesting twists and turns. I really love all of the main characters and the theme of each story.

Flavia Albia is by all accounts a true outsider. She is a woman in a man’s profession (private informer). She is a former street urchin from a backwater province (Britannia) now working in the imperial capital of Rome. However she is the adopted daughter of the master himself, Marcus Didius Falco, now sensibly retired, so she has picked up some skills from him as well as having her own special tricks due to her gender and street survival skills. These will be helpful as she discovers a strongbox for sale in her family’s auction business has not one but twice produced a corpse. After twenty adventures with Falco, Lindsey Davis has given us a worthy successor with Falvia Albia in this her third outing

I am enjoying this series about Flavia Albia which is a follow-up to Lindsey Davis's first series about Marcus Didius Falco, Flavia's adoptive father. The machinations of Ancient Rome are well-integrated in the mysterious murder.

She had good bones. Her face could have been pretty, given a lighter expression. She glared at me, a cold-blooded soul, who was a punishment to herself. She had never had to suffer as I had, yet she would never be as carefree as I was. Perhaps she saw that. Perhaps that was what annoyed her.
