Downtown business officials are enthusiastically welcoming increased policing and say it's a key to revitalizing the area. Lethbridge police formally introduced their beefed-up, eight-member downtown patrol unit Wednesday to the board of the Downtown Lethbridge business association. Previously only two officers were assigned to the downtown core. "Sometimes you need some spur to get things going in the right direction," said Hunter Heggie, association chairman. "this is a great spur in rejuvenating the downtown." Greater police visibility is a deterrent in itself and will be combined with education as well as ongoing consultation with downtown businesspeople.
