This is a great series! I noticed many elements of mystery and suspense which kept the story going.

Canadian author Peacock has put together an excellent series about the young Sherlock Holmes that stands with the very best of the Doyle imitators. In this first book,Sherlock is about 13 years old when he sees his mother die and starts his journey toward becoming a detective by searching for her murderer. Along the way, he meets young Irene Doyle (who we understand will grow into the future Irene Adler), the teenage son of Inspector Lestrade (who will grow into the title of Inspector Lestrade himself one day), and a highly intelligent teenage criminal mastermind known as “Malefactor.” If you have read Doyle’s Holmes stories, you will understand immediately what his future is.

Peacock completely nails the atmosphere and history of London in the late 1860s. You can smell the sewers, hear the hawkers, and see the dirt. But you can also see the growing brilliance of young Sherlock and his desperation to move away from his impoverished background to make something of himself. The mysteries themselves are full of the clues, misdirections, and dangerous criminals that you would expect from any Sherlock Holmes story. The reading level is perhaps 8th grade and up, with a rich vocabulary drawn from the times. They are published as children’s books but are thoroughly enjoyable for adults.

If you are a lover of Sherlock Holmes, then you will love boy Sherlock. The book explains what his life was like when he was younger, and why he is the way he is when he is the older Sherlock Holmes. I found the book very interesting, also his first case. Very good read.

I enjoyed this mystery series - I like reading the character of young Sherlock Holmes, and how Peacock created a history for such a well known detective.

I found this book interested until the last two chapters, then the story took a predictable turn and I lost all interest in the novel and the series. If it has one redeaming quality it is that this novel has made me want to read the original Sherlock Holmes.

"Eye of the Crow" is the first book in the "Sherlock Holmes as a Boy" series. This book was thrilling and took me for an entire roller coaster ride. It was a perfect combination of adventure, mystery, and suspense, with a blend of moments of fear, sadness, and joy. There are a few gory parts as well. I rated this book a perfect 5.

Next book in the series: Death in the Air

The first book in a series about the young Sherlock Holmes, Shane Peacock has created a fantastic, deliciously moody book that will certainly delight mystery fans both young and old. Great for ages 10+
