"Remarkable...mesmerizing...compelling.... An entire world unfolds in Tolstoyan tide of event and detail....Give yourself over to the world Ms. Tan creates for you." -- The New York Times Book Review

Winnie and Helen have kept each other's worst secrets for more than fifty years. Now, because she believes she is dying, Helen wants to expose everything. And Winnie angrily determines that she must be the one to tell her daughter, Pearl, about the past--including the terible truth even Helen does not know. And so begins Winnie's story of her life on a small island outside Shanghai in the 1920s, and other places in China during World War II, and traces the happy and desperate events tha led to Winnie's coming to America in 1949. The Kitchen God's Wife is "a beautiful book" ( Los Angeles Times ) from the author of bestselling novels like The Joy Luck Club and The Valley of Amazement , and the new memoir, Where the Past Begins.

Another great book by Amy Tan! Fantastic story telling and imagery of Chinese life during war time, as well as a nod to family relations. I highly recommend.

This book is for those who love a well told story. The author starts the book out on a humorous note but then spins a tale that is serious and very emotionally engaging. It is also a vividly portrayed story with some of the most beautiful imagery I have ever read. This book will have you thinking about the story and its characters long after you finish reading it. Highly recomended!

I love this book, because not only I learned how much a person might suffered in life, but also I learned how a family might have many problems and still be able to survive with each other in life. I highly recommend this book by Amy Tan!

Had to read it for my Lit.Circle in English and it's a great novel to read because it's so realistic.
