A welcoming story with beautiful charcoal illustrations. I love the pops of colour and the new friends being supportive and welcoming.

A beautiful gentle story.
Welcome" they cheered. "Please, come in and warm yourself."
You'll want to be invited in too.

I loved this one, which has beautiful pencil illustrations with well-placed splashes of color and a story that feels vaguely fairy tale-esque. A lovely, cozy winter read.

A magical tale with delightful charcoal and pencil drawings, including accents of yellow and red. Translated from Japanese. Ages 4-7.

Magical in the way of a folktale. A fresh coating of snow has fallen on the forest prompting Kikko's father to go to their grandmother's house...but in his hurry, he's forgotten the pie. So, just like Red Riding Hood, and indeed wearing a red cap and mitts, Kikko sets out by herself. Along the way, she stumbles upon a house, and gets invited to a strange tea party where all the guests are animals. Fortunately for her, they are much more agreeable than the wolf that Red met. They kindly treat her to some snacks, provide new pieces of pie for her ruined one, and even accompany her as she completes her journey. This delightful experience is illustrated mostly in black charcoal rubbed over a textured surface. The few bits of colour nicely counter this silent landscape of black figures and white snow, and the minimalism in both the art and story infuses a sense of the simple wonder and beauty of nature. There are dangers in this world, but that is not what this book is trying to say. Kindness can be found in the most unexpected of places, and friends can take the most unexpected of forms.
