Growing up in the same setting as this story, I so wanted to love it. And, I read it straight through savoring the evocative writing. But, then the ending came. Now, I've looked at reviews and interviews and see her purpose was much different than where my own anticipation took me. Disappointed.

2nd novel from Bonnie Nadzam, following her acclaimed debut "Lamb." I don't know if it's a coincidence that this book is called "Lions." While I think it's lazy to compare writers to other writers, it had a bit of a Willa Cather meets Raymond Carver feel. While I couldn't always get into the dead end lives of the characters living quietly desperate lives in a small, depressed town, she writes with precision and insight, which is a rarity these days.
