In the small Adirondack town of Millers Kill, New York, life doesn't stop for heartbreak. A brand-new officer in the police department, a breaking-and-entering, and trouble within his own family keep Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne busy enough to ignore the pain of losing his wife--and the woman he loves.

At St. Alban's Episcopal Church, the Reverend Clare Fergusson is trying to keep everyone happy while denying her own wounded soul. When a Mexican farmhand stumbles over a Latino man killed with a single shot to the back of his head, Clare is sucked into the investigation. The discovery of two more bodies executed in the same way ignites fears that a serial killer is loose. Now two would-be lovers, who thought they had lost everything, must find a way to trust each other again--as the violence strikes ever closer to home...

Library Journal calls Julia Spencer-Fleming's I Shall Not Want "Another suspenseful and involving mystery from an outstanding writer."

6th in the series of nine titles thru yr 2020.
If you read the series out of order or randomly, your insights into the plots will not be as rich as reading the series in sequence of title publication dates.
I found this plot to be gripping story of how our lives change, and how we are changed by the changes.
I remain especially touched by the depth of character given to Reverend Clare whose honesty in her human relations stands as a vulnerable truth of what holiness is about; and, she's a woman with a sense of humor. She changes the world in which she lives, in faith.

The issues of drug trafficking, regional gang activities, brutality, and Mexican workers at places such as dairy farms provide an educational background to the plot of the novel.

I didn't care for the mystery quite as much in this installment in the series. However, it was ok. It was the characters that kept me hooked on this one. Russ appears to be finally getting over his guilt related to his wife's death and is ready to move on with Clare. Clare meanwhile has joined the reserves at her bishop's urging. Apparently he was hoping military activities would fulfill her need for "action". This makes NO sense as obviously she will be called up and sent overseas. Oh well. This book also introduces a new character as Hadley Knox joins the Miller's Kill PD.
