At the advent of the new millennium, the residents of High Balsam are in desperate need of hope. Jobs are scarce and the gaping split between rich and poor is widening. For Margaret Bonner, the young pastor of High Balsam's Episcopal church, care of the community is her constant challenge and vocation. But now, into Margaret's well-ordered life will come three strangers -- a firebrand female preacher; an elderly, itinerant man; and a troubled boy -- whose explosive personalities will ignite a conflagration in Margaret's marriage...and in the depths of her very soul.

I found this to be a most insightful book that lent credibility and support to my often conflicting emotions around religion and God. I felt an appreciation for the everyday rituals, struggles and "sacred moments" of Margaret bonner's life. Not preachy but leaving me with the courage to keep going with my explorations.
