As much as it's acclaimed for being a mindblowing work of horror fiction, this book doesn't break any new ground. Monstrous inbred cannibals were handled better in Jack Ketchum's Off Season and the "killer victim" better in Richard Laymon's After Midnight. Depraved is derivative of both, and the addition of a supernatural element only serves to make the plot (such as it is) weaker. A few scenes are designed to be as shocking as possible, but end up being laughable for their transparency, and Smith introduces an incredible number of loose ends. Characters are just cardboard cutouts to be manipulated though the events of the story. Not really worth reading unless you enjoy gory timewasters. Gross, but not deep enough to be disturbing.
