Until a shocking betrayal--and a bold rescue--land her in the arms of a fierce Highlander, a powerful warrior whose searing gaze and tantalizing touch awaken her body and soul.

UNDENIABLE DESIRE

As the firstborn son of a powerful Scottish laird, Robert MacGregor has no loyalty to the English throne, but he's not the kind of man to leave a woman in distress, even if she is English. He vows to deliver Davina to safety, unharmed and untouched. Yet one stolen kiss leaves them both smoldering with desire...and desperate for more. With Davina's secret threatening to destroy his clan, Rob must choose between everything he holds dear and the one woman he can't live without.

“Over the course of their journey together, Rob’s deep, melodic voice had begun to feel as if it were coming from inside her, rather than from close behind. The touch of his body against her back, the caress of his arms coiled loosely about her waist had become familiar to her, comforting, and more profoundly intimate than even kissing him felt. She had no idea what kind of life awaited her beyond this ancient threshold that even Vikings could not penetrate, and though she was excited to begin living, she did not want the journey to end.” (p. 182)

“Nothing in Edward’s life had ever been as difficult as lying there, seemingly lifeless at Gilles’s feet. Nothing, save knowing that Davina was dead. He had failed her. Dear God, how would he ever forgive himself? He hadn’t yet met Davina when he was told it was she he was being sent to St. Christopher’s to protect four years ago. He’d been young and ambitious and he hadn’t yet heard her laughter ringing through the somber halls, or her prayers whispered through honeyed lips for mercy for her enemies. He hadn’t known how easily she could slay him with her tongue and a soft, teasing smile. He’d wanted to tell her the truth. She deserved that much, but just when he’d finally gathered the courage to tell her, Gilles’s men had come. Now it was too late.” (p. 49)

“The sisters had never kept the truth from her. Davina knew why she had been taken from her mother’s arms as a babe, abandoned by her father, and sent off to St. Christopher’s. She understood the value of her existence, for twice now it had cost her everything she loved. When Edward had arrived at the Abbey from King Charles’s court, he had told her of the men who sought her demise. And dear God, there were many. Though his warnings birthed a fear in Davina that was almost palpable, she understood his reasons for telling her. Ignorance of one’s foe was as dangerous as facing them on a battlefield. And so, she lived in uncertainty and unease, always aware of the danger around her.” (p. 31)

A very engaging, well-written journey, although with much blood-letting. I determined to skim past the early gore, but it wasn’t over, and the threat of it was always there, I suppose adding to the drama. That aspect was not to my taste, but the romance was fun. Closely-guarded secrets also lended to the intrigue.
