"In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines--puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win--and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape." -- publisher.

The book and more polished film differ in reasonable ways, but the core lessons of not judging by appearances and loyalty to friends are consistent. The book spends a lot of time describing how restrictively poor Wade is, so it has a harder time than the film making his rise to gunter fame believable but does give Wade's companions more credit. The challenges do differ but the car race found only in the film was cooler. Regardless, the author has done an impressive amount of '80s research and I can't help but feel nostalgic.

This is a fun easy read. Lots of references to 80s music, games and movies. I saw the movie first and then read to book. Don't worry if you have also because while the movie and book have the same concept there is a lot different between the two that you'll have surprises with the book.

Like junk food, it's super easy to consume, lacks substances, and forces you to question your life choices afterwards.

Luv'd this book! A real page-turner. Appropriate for anyone 13 years and older. OK - maybe 17 and older (some of the language is a little coarse. ;-) A cleverly done "Hero's Tale". Futuristic while being 1980's nostalgic at the same time. (How does he do that?!) I hope Spielberg does a great job on the 'big showdown' at the 3rd gate. Seems like a ready-made scene for his particular talent.

Read in 2011, LOVED IT, then listened to the Wheaties read it. Waited 7 painfully long years for the movie to be made.

As a grandmother I really didn't think I would enjoy this book. My kids were teenagers in the 80s so I had seen them play the games in the story. But I did like the book!! I was kept reading by the story and the game within a game. Hard to believe that only Wade could find the three keys, so was happy to see his friends get key two first. Sometimes I forgot if we were in the game or real life. I plan to watch the movies written about in the book again mainly "WarGames". I say read this book with an open mind and you will really enjoy it. And you don't have to be a gamer or a teenager to like it!

In 2044, reality is a grim place plagued by poverty, shortages and unemployment. Fortunately, people don't have to live in the real world anymore -- most entertainment, business and social interaction takes place in OASIS, a virtual world of amazing scope and detail. But now, OASIS will become the setting for an unprecedented battle royale. The creator of OASIS, upon his death, promised to give control of all his wealth, and his world, to the player who could complete a series of challenges based on his favorite movies and video games. For five years, nobody found anything...until Wade Watts, a 17-year-old, level-three nobody stumbles upon the first clue. Suddenly he's a celebrity with a shot at everything he's ever wanted -- but his opponents will stop at nothing, including murder, to see that he doesn't win.

An entertaining read about the 1980's "tech" looking back from 40 years in the future. Pacman, Atari 2600, and Journey are part of a quest through a completely virtual, all-encompassing universe.
