New Zealand Women Overseas in World War One

Book - 2017

Rate this:
New Zealand vaunts itself as first in the world to give women the vote but denies their active role in World War One. Doctors, dentists and ambulance drivers. Munitions workers and mathematicians. Members of the British women's services and managers of hospitals and convalescent homes. Many worked for free, and some paid for amenities whose provision is attributed to men's groups or the government. Echoing our national anthem, let's make their praises heard - after a century of suppression.

I am that customer. Jane Tolerton's book is indeed magic. The NZ women who found themselves in Europe at the outbreak of WWI,the nursing contingents and those that worked from home; all made a significant contribution to the war effort which has been overlooked in the official war histories and has long needed acknowledgement. The love story of Agnes Isobel Pearce aka Pickle, from Christchurch who became an ambulance driver and Military Doctor Thomas Duncan MacGregor Stout threads its way through the narrative. He was the son of Sir Robert Stout,13th Premier of New Zealand and he later took part in WWII, wrote several military histories and was the first Chancellor of Victoria University . They were photographed sitting on the steps at the Stout residence following their marriage in 1919.These women from all walks of life worked in munitions factories, hospitals, indeed anywhere they were needed. This is history brought alive. These are their stories.Jane's research is meticulous The book is beautifully presented but be careful. It is, literally, a weighty tome for its size because of the quality paper used.
