On one hand, the book provides unique insight into the evolution of dogs from wolves. You will finish this book with a deeper understanding and appreciation of both creatures as well as the history of their relationship to mankind. Another valuable insight will be a look into the psyche of a person who has no qualms about allowing a dangerous animal to roam freely in human society, off-leash, with little care for the people or animals that could be harmed. Though the author eventually had the animal put down, the wolf-dog was always on the verge of becoming a genuine menace to children, pets and even the author, herself. The author is a reality that is stranger than fiction. The reader, in perpetual awe, watches the author make one incomprehensible decision after another. She is a slave to her wolf-dog and her video-game junkie husband, contorting her life to the point of absurdity to make these odd relationships work. In this sense, the book provides insight into mental illness: the authors OCD, the husbands depression, the wolf-dogs' inability to fit into human society and the resulting menace this mix creates. If you want a book with valiant heroes juxtaposed to dastardly villains this is not the book for you. The characters are genuine but not likable.
