By happenstance and providence I finished reading 'The Room on Rue Amelie', today, June 6th (https://tinyurl.com/89d47e8e), exactly 77 years since "The Day the Word 'Courage' Came Alive" (https://tinyurl.com/9zxsvxxv). I liked this story. I wasn't sure where it was going at first, but it pulled me in. 'The Room on Rue Amelie' is a romance (that doesn't begin until the middle of the book), but a love story of good neighbors, of those you make your family, of courage in the face of evil and of selflessness for others. The French have pretty bad reputation because their government capitulated to and cooperated so easily with the Nazi's, however the French people, the resistance, were absolute heroes in risking their lives to help others. I was repeatedly struck by the sad thought that recent generations not only could not do what the people of that era did, but that they wouldn't even try to sacrifice so much for others. That thought is a horrible commentary on our self-involved culture. And frankly, I doubt that most even know the broad strokes of the history, let alone the details. The sad ending had me in tears, but it was also the one I didn't expect. 5 stars for 'The Room on Rue Amelie'.
