This book covers three generations of an African American family in New Orleans. The theme of this book is hope. The family faces systemic oppression through cycles of discrimination, poverty, drug abuse, and imprisonment. "Freedom" is a theme meandering throughout the different generations in varying ways. Margaret Wilkerson Sexton allows readers to draw their own conclusions about the type of freedom the generations gain.
