Director Louis Malle created a stylized, somewhat romantic, but extremely haunting movie about the last days of New Orleans' Storyville Red Light district. Young Keith Carradine is excellent as an obsessed photographer, who is also obsessed with a highly mature 12-year-old prostitute. Young Susan Sarandon plays her mother. The strength of the movie is the astonishing performance of 12-year-old, gorgeous Brooke Shields in the main role. It's the best thing she ever did. There is nudity involving both Susan Sarandon and young Brooke Shields, which created a major controversy, but despite the subject matter this is not pornography--it's a memorable work of art.
