George & Sam

Two Boys, One Family, and Autism

This book takes a clear-eyed look at what life for families with one or more autistic members is like - or can be. I found it extremely interesting. Charlotte Moore has two autistic sons and one "neurotypical" son. She is unflinching in her approach, pointing out that she wrote this book at least partly to redress the balance - having only seen books about autistic people with some element of genius. (I've also read The Spark and Born on a Blue Day, both of which are good but both of which definitely deal with the high-functioning end of the autistic spectrum.) As she says of George and Sam, "They are autistic through and through." For anyone who reads this and wants to learn where George and Sam are by 2012, this is an excellent ~15-minute video interview with Moore: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8-HvC7IKfw
