Hmm, I almost just brushed by this book, the pictures aren't that pretty and the story is just okay, but then it got me thinking and most of the time that's a good thing, right? The lead, Ben, comes across many seemingly fearsome and scary creatures but because he has been told he has nothing to fear from them and treats them as such, with politeness from one creature to another, they respond politely. I know there are mean people and even some monsters of people but I firmly believe, too, that many seemingly scary/mean people will respond to respect and kindness and if you expect them to be nice (maybe especially if others expect them to be otherwise), you create a self-fulfilling prophecy and they will be nice or respectful (or were nice or respectful all along). I love how the cat kind of just follows along and does its own thing, as cats often do.
