As in the earlier thriller "Mrs. Pollifax on Safari", author Dorothy Gilman presents a sharp-eyed description of post-colonial Africa - the people; the land, climate, and wildlife; and the political and economic issues and challenges. Gilman adds a dash of young love to balance the cast of evil characters. [Perhaps the coal mining excavator of Ubangiba is based on the "Zambian Queen" walking dragline excavator in Maamba, Zambia (available in Google Images at: http://www.londoloza.net/profile.htm)?]
