The Weight of our Sky by Hanna Alkaf follows the story of a young girl named Melati Ahmad. Melati lives in Malaysia, where tensions between the Chinese and Malay have grown to a breaking point. Melati is separated from her mother after a violent encounter, and is taken in by a Chinese family. Melati must face the inner demon that haunts her, a representation of her OCD, while navigating the extremely dangerous world around her. Overall, I enjoyed this book. I found Melati to be a brave and interesting character, and the storytelling of this narrative kept me flipping page after page. Hanna Alkaf grapples heavy themes in this book, but has created an interesting adventure as well. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in reading about a strong and unique heroine.
