Zadie Smith is brilliant, and I think she’s an acquired taste—take that how you may. Nevertheless, this book is definitely worth a listen. Doc Brown’s narration perfectly matches Smith’s wry sarcasm, and—a fun fact that I learned after listening—Brown happens to be Zadie Smith’s little brother! Grand Union is truly hilarious (although it’s not the kind of book that makes you laugh out loud), and its dry humor is juxtaposed with commentary on serious issues and timelines, including the infamous Trump era. Smith dives into her characters’ lives headfirst (I’m not likely to forget Miss Adele anytime soon), and her stories love to comment upon themselves and upon the way things work.
