I agree with bfcoffey...one of the worst books I have ever read. The only reason I finished it was because I wanted to see how it ended. I sure wasted my time! I was hoping for a twisted ending which Iles is know for.

I really enjoyed this book. It did have a slow pace which I had the patience for at this time. Every family has secrets of some sort, and I liked the way the author peeled back the pieces of the history that was "Rose". I am just not sure that a 29-year old Lucy would have had the insight and wisdom that the author gives her.I really enjoyed this book. One of the best books I have read in some time. I really liked his style of writing and his insight into human nature.

I don't know why I finished reading it. Every time Madelaine called her daughter "baby", I felt like screaming. I can't believe that Kristin Hannah wrote this book. It is worse than a Harlequin Romance I used to read many years ago as a teenager.

Being a visual person, this book was like watching a movie of Alaska and the family unprepared for homesteading in the 70's. Her description of the relationship between Cora and Ernt was from someone who obviously understands the abused woman. The character development was superb with the deep and abiding love of a mother and her child. The book made me want to visit Alaska as it was and not as a tourist.Being a visual person, this book was like watching a movie of Alaska and the family unprepared for homesteading in the 70's. I thought I was back in my teens reading a Harlequin Romance. The timeline is very unrealistic and the main character a bit unbelievable. Unfortunately, he does not come close to writing like his famous mother Rosamunde whose book the Shell Seekers was one of my all time favourites. I give it 2 stars for effort.I thought I was back in my teens reading a Harlequin Romance. The timeline is very unrealistic and the main character a bit unbelievable. I have read all of Terry's previous books and found this one to be one of his best after his first Best Laid Plans. It is not laugh out loud funny but the character Adam does have a very wry sense of humour with some very good lines. It is a true book of altruism and delightful in this day of "me first".I have read all of Terry's previous books and found this one to be one of his best after his first Best Laid Plans. I couldn't put this one down. I have read the Inspector Ramirez series from the first one and enjoyed this one the most... many twists and turns. Congrats to Peggy!

I suppose it was a good primer on the history of marriage, but I find Gilbert to be too self-focused and rather self-centered.
